How we chose our first sounds, what research can tell us, and how it will guide the music and videos still to come.

There is no single sound that feels peaceful to everyone. Rain can feel like quiet company to one person and a distraction to another. A melody might be welcome after a long day; on another evening, silence may be enough.
That is the starting point for RelaxZenZ: a choice of gentle sounds, with room to find what feels comfortable to you. We are building a media library for everyday relaxation, especially those moments when you want a little distance from the demands of the day.
Our first three sounds
The library begins with three short, original previews. Each offers a different listening texture, so you can explore without committing to a long session.
- Evening Garden 1 minute
- A gentle pentatonic melody with synthesized plucked strings and flute-like tones. It offers a little melodic warmth without a spoken introduction.
- Still Water 45 seconds
- Spacious, slowly fading, bowl-like tones. These sounds are digitally synthesized; they are not recordings of acoustic singing bowls or a therapist-led session.
- Rain at the Window 45 seconds
- A generated rain texture with subtle variation. It is a synthesized sound sketch, not a field recording of a real place.
These first previews were composed and programmed using digital synthesis, without third-party recordings, samples or voices. They were made before our research review. The review now gives us a more explicit foundation for evaluating and extending the library; it does not retrospectively validate these sketches.
You choose when a preview starts. Only one plays at a time, and you can pause or change sounds whenever you like. The short durations are there to make browsing easy, rather than to represent a scientifically established relaxation dose.
What the research says
We prepared a targeted review of 32 PubMed-indexed publications covering music, natural sounds, digital nature, frequencies and related topics. Stress and relaxation were the main focus. This was a critical reading of selected evidence, not an exhaustive systematic review, and PubMed indexing is not an endorsement of a product.
Music offers possibilities, with important differences between studies
A large systematic review found beneficial average effects of music interventions on psychological and physiological stress outcomes. However, it combined different populations and interventions, including settings that differ substantially from listening to a track at home. Read the review by de Witte and colleagues.
A review focused more narrowly on music listening after stress in healthy people did not find a statistically significant overall benefit. Together, these findings support exploring music for relaxation, while leaving uncertainty about who benefits, in which circumstances, and from which music. Read the review by Adiasto and colleagues.
Nature sounds are a useful direction to explore
A synthesis of natural-sound research found benefits for stress, annoyance and other outcomes across the included studies. That supports our interest in water, rain and nature-inspired soundscapes. The recordings, settings and comparison conditions varied, so the findings do not establish that generated rain works in the same way. Read the synthesis by Buxton and colleagues.
The comparison matters, too. A later review comparing natural sounds with quiet conditions found improvements in some physiological measures, but not a significant difference in perceived stress. A sound does not need to be better than silence for every listener to deserve a place in the library. Read the review by Fan and Baharum.
Nature imagery can complement the experience
A review of simulated natural environments reported benefits for mood and stress-related outcomes, although the included studies had limitations and used different formats. It gives us a reason to explore gentle nature imagery, not proof that a particular landscape, colour or camera movement will make you relax. Read the review by Li and colleagues.
From evidence to creative choices
Research can suggest a direction without supplying a recipe. We translate it into a creative brief: give the listener space, offer different textures, and avoid making relaxation feel like another task.
For future music, that means exploring sparse arrangements, gentle transitions and either a slow pulse or no marked beat. For nature sounds, it means exploring steady textures without intrusive events. For video, our direction is still or slowly changing scenery, with no need to keep watching. These are design choices to assess, not proven therapeutic settings.
There is no universal tempo, track length or colour palette in our review that guarantees relaxation. We also do not treat a technical audio setting as a guarantee about the volume reaching your ears. Your device and your own comfort remain part of the experience.
Personal preference belongs in the picture. Research on how people rate relaxation music found that preference and familiarity matter alongside musical characteristics. This is one reason we offer different sounds instead of naming one as the best. Read the study by Tan and colleagues.
A note on frequencies and singing bowls
Frequency is a real property of sound. Claims that a particular frequency reliably heals, resets the nervous system or guarantees a state of mind require much more evidence.
We do not present 432 Hz or 528 Hz as proven healing frequencies. Small or context-specific studies cannot establish a universal advantage for everyday listening. For example, research involving a body monochord in a cancer-care setting is a different experience from a streamed music track. Read the monochord study by Hohneck and colleagues.
Binaural beats are also distinct from musical tuning. They involve different tones presented to the two ears. A systematic review found inconsistent evidence that binaural beats produce the commonly claimed brainwave entrainment. Any future frequency experiments would need to be clearly identified as optional, with no promise of a particular brain state. Read the review by Ingendoh and colleagues.
There is emerging research on singing-bowl interventions, but the methods vary. That research does not validate our synthesized bowl-like preview. Still Water is offered for its resonant character and the space between its notes. Read the review by Cai and colleagues.
How the library will grow
The next stage is to turn this foundation into longer music, soundscapes and videos. We have prepared research-based briefs and creative presets; those are production plans, not a catalogue of finished or tested releases.
- Start with an everyday moment. A quiet arrival home, a pause between activities, or a little company while the evening settles.
- Choose a sound and visual direction. Record which research supports the broad approach, and separate that from our creative preferences.
- Review the finished media. Our release standard calls for checking the complete export, including abrupt sounds, distracting changes, looping, visual comfort and an accurate description of its origin.
- Keep the description proportionate. Explain what the piece contains and how it was made. Do not turn an encouraging study into a promise about the listener’s health.
As the library develops, listener feedback can help us understand comfort and preference. That feedback would guide design; it would not, by itself, demonstrate a clinical effect.
For now, start with a sound you like and a low, comfortable volume. You can look away, pause, or choose silence. RelaxZenZ is an invitation to take a moment for yourself, not medical or psychological treatment.
